What Is the Mandela Effect?
The Mandela Effect describes a phenomenon in which a large number of people share the same memory of an event, detail, or cultural artifact that differs from the currently accepted historical record.
The term originates from widespread reports that Nelson Mandela died in prison during the 1980s—often remembered as occurring between 1985 and 1989, with some recalling televised funeral coverage and a speech by his widow. In documented history, Mandela was released from prison in 1990, became President of South Africa in 1994, and died in 2013.[1][2]
This discrepancy between shared recollection and the historical record gave rise to public discussion and later academic and popular examination. The phrase “Mandela Effect” was popularized in 2009 by paranormal researcher Fiona Broome, following discussions on her website describing collective false memories related to Mandela’s death.[3]
Within this archive, the foundational case is documented as:
Some interpret Mandela Effects as examples of false memory, confabulation, or social reinforcement—concepts well documented in cognitive psychology.[4] Others explore more speculative explanations, including timeline divergence, simulation theory, or multiverse models. Mandela.Agency does not endorse a single explanation—its purpose is documentation, comparison, and open inquiry.
